The number of victims of the attack that targeted a cafe in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, rose today, Sunday, to nine dead, according to what security sources said.
This death toll is four more deaths than the previous toll, which they estimated at five deaths, who fell as a result of a car bomb explosion outside a cafe in Mogadishu, according to police.
Abdel Fattah Aden Hassan, spokesman for the Somali police, told reporters that some citizens were watching the final match of the European Championship “Euro 2024” between the teams of Spain and England inside the cafe when the car bomb exploded outside, adding that more than 20 other people were injured in the attack.
Online photos, allegedly taken from the scene, showed a fire outside the cafe following the explosion.
Ismail Aden, an eyewitness, told The Associated Press by phone, “Some spectators were injured while trying to jump the wall surrounding the café, while others were injured due to the stampede.”
He added that most of the victims were in the street at the time of the explosion.
No party has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion, but there are often reports of attacks launched by Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu and other Somali cities.
It is noteworthy that yesterday, Saturday, there was an attempt by inmates to escape from a Mogadishu prison.
In that attack, which killed at least 8 people, inmates convicted of carrying out attacks on behalf of Al-Shabaab exchanged gunfire with prison guards before they died.
