A 17-year-old Chinese player died on the field

On Monday, a 17-year-old Chinese player named Zhang Zhijie died after falling on the field during an Asian tournament in Yogyakarta province, Indonesia.

According to the Indonesian Badminton Federation, Zhang Zhijie was facing Japanese Kazuma Kawano in the Asian Junior Badminton Championship yesterday, Sunday, when he fell unconscious and suffered seizures.


A video clip posted on social media showed the moment the player suddenly fell to the ground before his death was announced after he was taken to the hospital.


Badminton officials said Zhang was treated by medical teams on the court and he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Sardjeto General Hospital, a major government hospital in Yogyakarta.


Indonesian Badminton Federation spokesman Proto Happi told reporters: “The results of the examination and treatment of the victim in both hospitals showed the same results, which is that he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.”


The Chinese Badminton Association extended its condolences and support to Zhang's family, describing him as a player who "loved badminton and was an outstanding athlete in the national youth badminton team."
