The Kremlin said late Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss the situation in the Middle East with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Moscow on Tuesday.

“An exchange of views on the situation in the Middle East is expected amid the aggravation of the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip,” the Kremlin said in a post on its Telegram messaging app.

Abbas traveled to Moscow for a long-awaited visit that will last until Wednesday, after which he is scheduled to travel to Turkey for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Russia condemned the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and called on all parties to stop destabilizing the Middle East.

It has also repeatedly criticized the West for ignoring the need for an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
