Al-Ghazouani wins a second presidential term in Mauritania

The official results of the Mauritanian presidential elections showed, on Monday, that President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani won a second term after obtaining more than 56% of the votes.

أظهرت النتائج الرسمية للانتخابات الرئاسية الموريتانية، اليوم الاثنين، فوز الرئيس محمد ولد الشيخ الغزواني بولاية ثانية بعد حصوله على أكثر من 56% من الأصوات.

The Mauritanian News Agency reported that the Elections Commission published the results after the vote counting was completed on its official website, and Al-Ghazwani topped the presidential election results with a percentage of 56.12%.


Candidate Biram Dah Ould Abeid came in second place, obtaining 22% of the votes, and the Islamist candidate of the National Rally for Reform and Development (Tawasul) Party, Hammadi Ould Sidi Al-Mukhtar, came third, obtaining about 13% of the votes.


Registered voters are about 2 million

The number of voters registered to vote reached about two million people, and the participation rate in the elections reached more than 55%, according to preliminary official figures.


Mauritanians went to the polls on Saturday to cast their votes in a presidential election that Ould Ghazouani is widely expected to win, with a pledge to boost investment in the West African country as it prepares to start producing natural gas.


Al-Ghazwani, 67 years old, promised to implement attractive policies for investors to achieve a boom in primary commodities in the country, which has a population of five million people, many of whom live in poverty despite its wealth in fossil fuels and minerals.


“The Mauritanian voters have the final say,” Ghazouani said after voting in the capital. “I commit myself to respecting their choice.”
