Beijing sets a record in its foreign trade of $256 billion in 6 months

The Chinese capital, Beijing, recorded a record high in its foreign trade of 1.83 trillion yuan (about $256.61 billion) in the first half of 2024.

The results of official data issued by the Beijing Municipal Customs Directorate showed that the volume of imports and exports in Beijing increased by 3.6 percent on an annual basis during the aforementioned period, constituting 8.7 percent of the country's total foreign trade.


Over the first six months of this year, emerging industries have become an important contributor to export growth in Beijing, representing 27.8 percent of the city's total export volume.


In general, total imports and exports of Chinese goods increased by 6.1 percent on an annual basis in terms of value in yuan, during the first half of this year.


Data from the Chinese Customs Administration on Friday showed that dollar-denominated exports grew by 8.6 percent year-on-year in June after rising by 7.6 percent in May.


Chinese imports fell by 2.3 percent after increasing by 1.8 percent in the previous month.


This led to an increase in the trade surplus of the second largest economy in the world to $99.05 billion from $82.62 billion in May, exceeding expectations of an increase to $85 billion.


The data indicated that China's automobile exports rose by 18 percent on an annual basis in June, despite new Western restrictions on imports of Chinese-made electric cars.
