On Thursday, the Israeli Knesset voted overwhelmingly on a draft resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, according to the Times of Israel.
The decision was supported by parties in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, along with the right-wing opposition parties, and was supported by the centrist National Unity Party led by Benny Gantz.
On the other hand, representatives from the Yesh Atid party, led by opposition leader Yair Lapid, from the center left, left the plenary session to avoid supporting the measure despite his support for the two-state solution.
Text of the resolution
The resolution states that “the Knesset strongly opposes” the establishment of a Palestinian state.
He considers that “the establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel would constitute an existential threat to the State of Israel and its citizens.
"It will perpetuate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and destabilize the region."
The text added: “It will only take a short time for Hamas to seize control of the Palestinian state and turn it into an extremist terrorist base, working in coordination with the Iranian-led axis to eliminate the State of Israel.”
The text stated, “Pushing the idea of a Palestinian state will be a reward for terrorism, and will only encourage Hamas and its supporters, who will consider this a victory achieved thanks to the events of October 7, and a prelude to extremism taking control of the Middle East.”
It is noteworthy that the decision was passed a few days before Netanyahu's expected visit to the United States, where he will deliver a speech before Congress and meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House.
The move is expected to anger Democrats who feel uncomfortable supporting an Israeli government that increasingly rejects the two-state solution.
Many countries around the world, including the United States, support the two-state solution as a necessary step to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
It is noteworthy that on October 7, Hamas launched unprecedented attacks on Israel, which led to the killing of about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, including women and children, in addition to the kidnapping of about 250 hostages, according to official figures.
On the other hand, Israel responded with intense bombing and ground operations inside the Palestinian Strip, causing the deaths of about 39,000 people, the majority of whom were women and children, in addition to tens of thousands of injuries, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
