China calls for more testing of US athletes

The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday called on the World Anti-Doping Agency to intensify doping tests on US athletes after American runner Erion Knighton was found to have violated doping regulations.

Two days ago, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency accused its US counterpart of double standards, saying the latter was doing its utmost to exonerate US athletes while at the same time accusing the Chinese agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency of covering up some violations.

After Knighton failed a doping test earlier this year, the American athlete was not punished or banned from participating in the Paris Olympics after a jury ruled that the presence of the banned substance in his sample may have been due to food contamination.

The head of the US Anti-Doping Agency has spoken extensively about the 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive before the 2021 Tokyo Games and were allowed to participate in the tournament.

The Chinese agency said the trindolone found in Knighton's sample was a common contaminant in the United States and that athletes should have been more aware of it.

"In light of the above, we strongly urge WADA to strengthen supervision over the testing of US track and field athletes, prevent the risk of doping violations, and strictly investigate relevant cases in order to protect the legitimate rights and interests of clean athletes around the world and restore the confidence of athletes around the world in fair competition," the agency said in a statement.
