Eilat Port declares bankruptcy due to Houthi attacks

The "WorldCargo" website, concerned with global shipping news, reported that the port of Eilat declared bankruptcy due to the lack of commercial activity, as a result of attacks launched by the Yemeni Houthi group on Israeli ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea.

The port's CEO, Gideon Golbert, told the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee last Sunday that the port had not witnessed any activity or revenues for eight months, according to the website.

The website indicated that the port was damaged by the Houthi attacks, which greatly affected the trade movement to Israel.

He continued that the Houthi operations in the Red Sea led to a decrease in shipping traffic by 85%, which prompted the port to request financial assistance from the Israeli government.

In solidarity with Gaza, which is facing a devastating Israeli war, the Houthis are targeting Israeli or associated cargo ships in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, with missiles and drones, according to the Anatolia News Agency.

Since last January 12, a US-led coalition has launched raids that it says target Houthi sites in various regions of Yemen, in response to its naval attacks, which has been met with a response from the group from time to time.

As Washington and London intervened and tensions took an escalating turn in January, the Houthi group announced that it now considered all American and British ships among its military targets.
