French President Emmanuel Macron said in a message on Tuesday that France recognizes the Moroccan proposal for autonomy for the Moroccan Sahara region, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as the only basis for a permanent solution to the issue.
Macron added in a message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of Morocco's National Day: "For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved."
The French president said: "Our support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 is clear and constant."
Macron added that this plan "constitutes from now on the only basis for reaching a just, sustainable and negotiated political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council."
France had previously expressed its "clear and constant" support for the autonomy proposal during Foreign Minister Stephane Le Foll's visit to Morocco in February, which contributed to improving relations between Paris and Rabat.
The French recognition comes after the United States, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and a number of Arab and African countries recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and supported its autonomy plan.
