Voters in France began casting their votes on Sunday in the second round of legislative elections that will reshape the political landscape in the country.
The French Ministry of the Interior said, on Sunday afternoon, that the participation rate in the elections, as of 12 noon local time, amounted to 26.63%, while the percentage in 2022 at the same time reached 18.99%.
On the other hand, the participation rate in the first round of the French legislative elections, at the same time, reached 25.9% last week
The ministry explained that the turnout rate in the French elections as of midday exceeded the voter turnout recorded at the same time in the first round last week.
French media reported that the voter turnout recorded as of midday on Sunday was the highest since 1981.
Opinion polls predict that the right-wing National Rally Party will receive the largest percentage of votes, but it will not enable it to win an absolute majority.
Such an outcome could lead to a hung and chaotic parliament, which could severely affect the authority of President Emmanuel Macron.
If the nationalist National Rally party, which is skeptical about the feasibility of France’s membership in the European Union, wins a majority, the president may find himself forced into a difficult “coexistence.”
