The European Football Association (UEFA) has opened an investigation against Turkish defender Merih Demiral due to “possible inappropriate behavior” during the European Cup quarter-final match against Austria (2-1), according to what was reported on Wednesday.
Demiral scored two goals for his country on Tuesday in Leipzig, leading it to the quarter-finals, where it will face the Netherlands on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
Demiral himself posted a picture of himself on the “X” website celebrating one of his two goals against Austria, raising his hand in the “Grey Wolves” sign of a far-right group in Turkey.
The European Union said in a statement that an “investigator has been appointed to decide on ethics and discipline issues,” with more information to follow on this matter.
German Interior Minister Nancy Weser responded to Demiral's movement with a post on the "AX" website, saying that "the symbol of Turkish right-wing extremists has no place in our stadiums," adding: "Using European football as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable. We are waiting for the European Union to do so." Football will investigate the case and consider sanctions.”
