Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign announced Thursday that the billionaire is currently refusing to set any timetable for a debate with his presumed Democratic rival Kamala Harris because she has not yet officially secured the Democratic nomination.
"The details of the general election debate cannot be finalized until Democrats formally decide on their nominee," Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung said in a statement. "It would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats could change their minds."
"Given the ongoing political chaos" caused by Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race in favor of his running mate Kamala Harris, committing to a debate date is "inappropriate," he added.
"There is a strong sense among many Democrats — particularly Barack Hussein Obama — that Kamala Harris is a Marxist fraud who cannot defeat President Trump, and they are still waiting for someone 'better+,'" the statement continued.
Harris had earlier confirmed her willingness to debate Trump.
She said she was "ready" to debate former President Donald Trump, the Republican Party's nominee in the November election.
"I'm ready, let's do it," she told reporters.
"I'm ready to debate Trump. I have agreed to the previously scheduled debate on September 10," Harris said. He's agreed to that before. Now, he's backing away and I'm ready and I think voters deserve to see the split screen that this race is on the debate stage, so I'm ready to go."
