In a controversial case, American gymnast Jordan Chiles was stripped of her bronze medal at the Olympic Games, after winning it, in a bizarre Olympic decision.
Chiles will be forced to return the medal, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a refereeing decision that pushed her from fifth to third place, during the floor gymnastics competition in Paris a week ago.
US Olympic officials say they will appeal the court’s ruling.
What’s the story?
After the floor gymnastics competition ended, Chiles was in fifth place in the standings, before US coach Cecil Landy asked the judges to “re-evaluate,” until 0.1 was added to Chiles’ final score after the review, pushing her to third place.
The decision led to the Romanian Ana Barbosu being removed from the podium and deprived of the bronze medal.
Days after the American’s triumph and the Romanian’s tears, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the American coach’s request for a review of the result came “outside the time limit set by the International Gymnastics Federation for an appeal of the result after the athlete’s performance.”
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the initial order of the competition should be re-arranged, meaning that Romania’s Barboso will replace Chiles in third place.
Her teammate Sabrina Manica-Vojnia will finish fourth and Chiles fifth.
The American will be required to return the bronze medal to the Olympic Committee so that it can be awarded to Barboso.
