“In recent weeks, it has become clear to me that I must unite my party,” he said in a speech addressed to the nation, adding that “the time has come for there to be new voices (...) voices of younger people,” according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.

Biden stressed that America is stronger than any tyrant. He said, “America is an idea, an idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, and stronger than any dictator or tyrant. It is the strongest idea in the history of the world.”

The US President praised his vice president, Kamala Harris, who will replace him as the Democratic Party's candidate for the presidential elections, describing her as an "experienced and strong" woman.

Biden said in his speech from the Oval Office of the White House that Harris "has experience, she is strong, she is competent. She has been a wonderful partner for me (...) Now the choice is up to you, the American people."

Biden indicated that he will focus in the next six months on carrying out his duties as president. "It has been the honor of my life to serve this country for more than 50 years," he said.

"I will continue to defend our personal freedoms and civil rights, from the right to vote to the right to choose," he added.
