A poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos showed that US Vice President Kamala Harris is two percentage points ahead of Republican Party candidate Donald Trump after Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential elections and supported Harris' candidacy instead.
The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday after the Republican National Convention, where Trump officially accepted the party's nomination for the presidential election on Thursday, and also after Biden announced on Sunday his withdrawal and support for Harris.
Harris, whose campaign says she has the support of the Democratic Party, led Trump 44 percent to 42 percent in a poll of registered voters with a margin of error of three percentage points.
Harris and Trump tied at 44 percent each in a poll conducted on July 15 and 16, while Trump advanced by one percentage point in a poll conducted on the first and second of this month, and both have the same margin of error.
National polls provide important indicators of Americans' support for candidates, but a group of competitive states usually decide their results in the US Electoral College, which ultimately decides who wins the presidential elections.
The poll was conducted online and included 1,241 Americans who have the right to vote nationwide, including 1,018 registered voters.
Support from the two Democratic leaders in Congress
On Tuesday, the two Democratic leaders in the US Congress announced their support for Kamala Harris' candidacy for the presidential elections.
This came after Harris received the support of most members of her party to confront Republican candidate Trump in the elections scheduled for next November.
“We are here today to offer our support to Vice President Kamala Harris,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint news conference with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
On Monday, Harris confirmed that she had received the significant support required to win the Democratic Party nomination for the presidential elections.
She declared that she was "proud to have received the broad support needed to become the Democratic Party's nominee" and thus replace Biden in the race for the White House.
American media reported that the majority of Democratic delegates, numbering about 4,000 people charged with officially choosing the party's nominee, have already announced their intention to support Harris.
The US Vice President said in a statement: “I look forward to soon being able to formally accept this appointment.”
