The Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command announced that it has completed trials of a new system for sending general location-based warning messages, and it is now operational.
The new system relies on cellular broadcast technology, a method of sending short messages to multiple phone users in a specific area.
The Home Front Command said the system will enable “receiving a message in large-scale emergencies, such as rocket fire on Israel.”
The alerts will appear on the user’s phone without the need to install an app or take any prior action. An alarm will sound along with the emergency message.
The Home Front Command said the system is not intended to replace its app or sirens, but is intended for “large-scale sudden emergencies.”
