Israeli press reports revealed that the missile that killed Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was launched from inside Iran.
Israeli Channel 12 said that "according to an analysis of the information received from Iran, it appears that the missile that killed Haniyeh (between Tuesday and Wednesday) was launched from inside Iran, and was not launched from a plane or drone" as Tehran claimed.
Media outlets close to Iran confirmed that the missile that killed Haniyeh and his companion at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Tehran time, came from outside Iran.
The analysis reported by Channel 12 raises talk of a "major security breach" inside Iran, which allowed the targeting of Hamas's most prominent political leader inside Tehran.
Hamas and Iran said that Haniyeh was assassinated in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Tehran, sparking a wave of threats of revenge against Israel, in a region already ravaged by war in the Gaza Strip and the outbreak of conflict in Lebanon.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed Haniyeh's death hours after he attended the inauguration ceremony of the country's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and said that it was conducting an investigation.
Despite speculation that Israel carried out the attack, the Israeli government has not claimed responsibility and said it would not comment on the assassination.
