Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei announced on Sunday the appointment of reformist Masoud Pezeshkian as the new president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, after he won the elections held in the wake of the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.
The head of the Supreme Leader's office read out the inauguration statement, which read: "In consecration of the will of the great people, I carry out their votes in choosing a wise, honest, popular and knowledgeable personality and entrust him with the presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
The inauguration ceremony of Pezeshkian as the country's ninth president since 1979 was held in the presence of Iranian officials and foreign diplomats.
The new president will be sworn in before the Shura Council (parliament) on Tuesday.
Pezeshkian defeated hardline conservative Saeed Jalili in the second round of the presidential election held on July 5.
The presidential election was originally scheduled for 2025, but was held early this year after Raisi's death in a helicopter crash last May.
Pezeshkian, 69, received more than 16 million votes, or about 54 percent of the total number of voters, which amounted to about 30 million.
The turnout in the second round was 49.8 percent, while the turnout was around 40 percent in the first round, and was the lowest in the history of presidential elections in Iran.
