Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Mohammad Yunus said on Thursday that student protesters who forced Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign saved the country and that freedom must be protected.
Yunus made the comments to reporters after arriving in the capital Dhaka to head the new interim government after weeks of violence, according to Reuters.
Yunus appealed to citizens to remain calm and prepare to rebuild the country following the uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina's 16-year rule, according to the Associated Press.
Yunus landed at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday afternoon, where he was greeted by army chief Waqar Zaman, who was accompanied by the heads of the navy and air forces.
Some of the leaders of the student movement that led to Hasina's ouster were also at the airport to welcome Yunus.
Yunus was appointed interim leader after talks between military officials, civil society leaders and student activists who led the uprising against Hasina.
Security has been tightened at the airport to ensure Yunus' safe arrival.
Yunus will be sworn in by President Mohammad Shahabuddin on Thursday evening, and is expected to announce his new government.
