Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital announced that its vascular surgery and catheterization team, led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Fawaz, achieved an important achievement by “performing the first operation in the Middle East to repair an aneurysm in the arch of the thoracic aorta (Thoracic Aortic Arch Aneurysm) by surgically modifying a stent to suit the sizes and branches of the patient’s arteries and then implanting it.” Through the catheter.
The hospital said in a press statement on Thursday that the technology used is considered a safer alternative compared to traditional, custom-made stents that are very expensive and contain stents in the blood vessels leading to the brain.
He explained that studies showed that the technique, which was used for the first time in Kuwait and the Middle East, significantly reduces the risk of stroke associated with the procedures, as it was characterized by creating one large opening to irrigate the brachiocephalic artery and the left common carotid artery, and a small opening. Left subclavian artery.
He stated that the patient was suffering from an aneurysm in the arch of the aorta, which usually requires major open surgery with cessation of blood circulation, but the patient’s health condition and anatomical structure made this type of treatment inappropriate and high-risk.
He stated that the operation was performed using local anesthesia only, and the patient did not suffer any complications during or after the surgery and was able to leave the hospital the next day, pointing out that this type of procedure requires high technical skills, careful planning, and cooperation between multiple medical specialties that contribute to its success.
He pointed out "the vital role of the nursing team and technicians in every step of treatment and the unlimited support from the Ministry of Health in providing the latest technologies in treating patients," adding that the merger and integration of expertise between vascular surgery and interventional radiology made Mubarak Hospital one of the specialized and excellent medical centers in treating aneurysms. Aorta.
