Netanyahu's conditions raise "surprise" of the negotiating team in the hostage deal

The Israeli negotiating team and senior security officials announced their surprise at the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office’s announcement, on Sunday, of the conditions set by Benjamin Netanyahu for the expected deal with Hamas.

A senior member of the negotiating team said, "Netanyahu constantly accumulates difficulties, drowns out and highlights differences, and does not focus on the points that have been agreed upon and that can be benefited from."

Netanyahu's conditions were announced before the Israeli delegation left for Doha to complete the negotiation process.

According to Israeli Channel 12, “The prevailing feeling in the negotiating team is that instead of providing positive direction, the prime minister is focusing on the difficult issues.”

In the announcement published by Netanyahu, two new requests were added to what had been agreed upon with the team.

In the wake of the announcement, suspicions towards Netanyahu have increased, and there are sources who believe that he is trying to torpedo the deal.

Netanyahu's conditions

  • Any ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip must allow Israel to continue fighting until it achieves its war goals.

  • The agreement must prevent the smuggling of weapons to Hamas across the border between Gaza and Egypt.

  • Thousands of militants must not be allowed to return to northern Gaza.

  • Israel will work to return the largest number of living hostages.

Netanyahu's statement comes amid renewed mediation efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to urge Israel and Hamas to engage in talks to stop the war that has been ongoing for 9 months and reach an agreement to release hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian detainees in Israel.
