North Korea sends balloons loaded with garbage towards its southern neighbor

On Sunday, North Korea launched new balloons carrying waste towards South Korea, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff added that the balloons appear to be heading towards the northern part of Gyeonggi Province surrounding the capital, Seoul, and advised people not to touch these objects and to inform the military or police authorities near them.

With the latest launch, North Korea has sent more than 2,000 garbage balloons to South Korea in response to North Korean defectors sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets towards the North.

Since last May, North Korea has released thousands of balloons with garbage bags attached to them, which has become a new source of tension between the two Koreas.

On Friday, the South Korean army resumed its round-the-clock propaganda campaign via loudspeakers targeting North Korea in response to what it described as Pyongyang's "disgraceful, shameful and vulgar" launching of balloons carrying waste across the border.

North Korea strongly objects to loudspeaker campaigns, as well as anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent by South Korean activists, due to concerns that the flow of external information poses a threat to Kim Jong Un's regime.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of Kim Jong-un, threatened last week that South Korea would face "horrific and costly" consequences if it allowed North Korean defectors to continue sending leaflets critical of North Korea.
