Israeli Channel 12 reported on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering dismissing Defense Minister Yoav Galant from his position and replacing him with the head of the New Hope party, Gideon Sa'ar.
According to the report, Netanyahu is holding consultations on the matter during the Knesset’s three-month summer recess.
Sa’ar announced his party’s withdrawal from Netanyahu’s coalition in March after his request to join the war cabinet was rejected.
Since then, Sa’ar has been highly critical of the government’s handling of the war in Gaza and has said he would be willing to make “concessions” to create a right-wing bloc opposed to Netanyahu, according to the Times of Israel.
The Israel Broadcasting Corporation reported last week that Netanyahu was planning to appoint Sa’ar as Galant’s replacement.
Galant has been siding with the military against politicians led by Netanyahu over the hostage swap deal with Hamas, the ceasefire in Gaza and the Israeli prime minister’s ongoing escalation strategy.
