Russian forces continue to confront a Ukrainian incursion into the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Russia has imposed a broad security regime in three border regions and has mobilized forces to confront the largest Ukrainian counterattack on Russian territory since the outbreak of the war in 2022.
The Russian nuclear agency said on Saturday that the cross-border attack launched by Ukraine "posed a direct threat" to a nuclear power plant located less than 50 kilometers from the combat zone.
Russian news agencies quoted Rosatom as saying that "the actions of the Ukrainian army pose a direct threat" to the Kursk nuclear power plant in western Russia near the border with Ukraine, adding that "at the present time, there is a real risk of strikes and provocations by the Ukrainian army."
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee announced on Friday evening that it was launching "counter-terrorist operations in the Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions... to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent the threat of terrorist acts carried out by enemy subversive groups."
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his pleasure at the initial successes achieved by his forces, announcing earlier in the week that Russia should "feel" the consequences of the large-scale offensive it has been waging against Ukraine since February 2022.
