The British government said in a statement on Thursday that new Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed with US President Joe Biden aspirations for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of those detained by Hamas, and the entry of aid.

The statement added that Biden and Starmer also discussed relations between the two countries and the Ukraine crisis during a meeting at the White House yesterday, Wednesday.

Biden and Starmer agreed on the need to do what is necessary to support Ukraine in the war against Russia, and discussed their common desire for a ceasefire in Gaza to release the hostages, bring aid into the Strip, and make progress towards a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The statement also stated that Biden welcomed Starmer's desire to strengthen relations with his European counterparts.

The British government statement said, “The (US) President welcomed the (British) Prime Minister’s latest comments on establishing closer relations with our European counterparts, as well as the United Kingdom’s commitment to OKOS,” referring to the OKOS Security Partnership Agreement between Britain, the United States and Australia.

He added, "They pointed out that at a time when we are facing increasing challenges globally, unity and working together make us our strongest."

Starmer visited Washington to attend the NATO summit, where he also met with European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Starmer said he wants Britain to reset its relations with the European Union to improve cooperation in areas such as security and trade, in an effort to alleviate the pain caused by Britain's 2016 referendum to leave the bloc.

However, he has ruled out any move to rejoin the single market or the EU customs union.
