Six sources in the oil and gas sector told Reuters that several major oil and gas trading headquarters in London and Singapore were facing difficulties in carrying out transactions due to an Internet outage on Friday.
Meanwhile, the largest railway operator in the United Kingdom announced that it was facing “widespread technical problems” on Friday, warning of the possibility of canceling flights.
“We are currently facing widespread IT issues across our entire network,” Govia TeamsLink Railway (GTR) explained on the X platform.
Users of Microsoft services around the world, including banks and airlines, reported widespread outages on Friday, hours after the technology company announced that it was gradually working to fix a problem affecting access to Microsoft 365 applications and services.
The cause, exact nature and extent of the outage were not clear.
Microsoft appears to indicate in its posts on the X website that the situation is improving but escalating outages are still being reported around the world after hours.
DownDetector, which tracks internet outages reported by users, has recorded increasing outages at Visa, ADT Security, Amazon, and airlines including Delta and American Airlines.
Australian media reported that airlines, telecommunications service providers, banks and media outlets were disrupted due to loss of access to computer systems.
Some New Zealand banks said they were also offline.
Microsoft 365 posted on the X app that the company is “working to redirect affected traffic to alternative systems to mitigate the impact in a more appropriate manner” and that they are “noticing a positive trend in service availability.”
Australian outages reported on the site included several banks, airlines Qantas and Virgin Australia, as well as internet and phone providers such as Telstra.
News media in Australia - including the ABC and Sky News were unable to broadcast on their TV and radio channels, and reported a sudden shutdown of Windows computers.
