Turkey announces joining genocide case against Israel at ICJ

Turkey will submit a declaration on Wednesday to join South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, a diplomatic source said.

تركيا تعلن انضمامها لقضية الإبادة الجماعية ضد إسرائيل في محكمة العدل الدولية

The source added that the declaration will be issued at 1330 GMT, after Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this week that Turkey would issue the declaration on Wednesday.

"Turkish intervention will push the international community to recognize and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza," the source added, according to Reuters.

In May, Turkey said it had decided to join the case filed by South Africa as part of its escalation of measures against Israel over its offensive in the Gaza Strip, adding that its bid would adhere to the necessary legal preparations for the move.

In June, Spain said it had requested to join the case at the ICJ.

The ICJ is the highest court in the United Nations and was established in 1945 to deal with disputes between states.

Israel has repeatedly rejected the genocide accusations as baseless, saying in court that its operations in the Gaza Strip were self-defense and targeted Hamas militants who attacked Israel on October 7.
