Turkish media reported on Friday evening that forest fires have spread to residential areas in Izmir, Turkey's third-most populous city.

Three neighbourhoods in the Karsiyaka and Bayrakli districts have been evacuated, while 16 buildings have been damaged by the fires, authorities said, adding that no casualties were reported.

The forest fire, which started on Thursday night, quickly spread to residential areas due to winds that reached speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour during the day.

Thick smoke covered almost the entire city and the sky turned orange and grey, according to images broadcast by Turkish media.

Animal rights activists also evacuated a shelter for stray dogs.

Turkish news channel NTV reported that strong winds made it impossible for helicopters dropping water to intervene at night.

As part of the reinforcements, firefighters from several Turkish cities were sent to the area, and the army and police were also mobilised.
