Ukraine announces new push into Russian territory

Ukraine said on Tuesday its forces had captured 74 settlements in Russia’s southern Kursk region and advanced 1-3 kilometers (1-2 miles) across the border in the past 24 hours.

Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the army had captured 40 square kilometers (15 square miles) of new territory in the past 24 hours.


The acting governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, said on Monday that the Ukrainian army had begun pushing into Russian territory on Aug. 6 in the border region, where his forces had taken control of 28 villages.
