Egypt and Somalia sign military cooperation protocol

Egypt signed a military cooperation protocol with Somalia on Wednesday, and Cairo decided to open an embassy in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The Egyptian presidential spokesman said that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received his Somali counterpart, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, who is on an official visit to Egypt for several days.


The spokesman explained that El-Sisi stressed during the meeting Egypt's position in support of the unity and sovereignty of Somalia over its lands, and rejecting any interference in its internal affairs.


The two presidents also welcomed the mutual steps between the two countries to deepen bilateral cooperation, including launching a direct flight line between Cairo and Mogadishu, and opening the Egyptian embassy in its new headquarters in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in addition to signing a military cooperation protocol between the two countries during the Somali president's visit to Egypt.


The Somali president expressed his country's keenness to strengthen economic, security and political ties with Egypt during the coming period, appreciating the role of various Egyptian bodies in building the capabilities of Somali cadres in various fields.


The official spokesman added that the meeting witnessed discussions on various regional and international issues of common interest, where it was agreed to intensify consultation and coordination during the coming period, to continue working to establish security and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
